Can the bowlers who proved expensive in IPL expect some relief in ICC T20 World Cup 2024? This question has arisen due to changes in T20 batting in the recent season of IPL. Before IPL 2024, the 250-run mark was crossed only twice in the league, but teams managed to do so 8 times in the recently concluded season.
Batsmen like Australia’s Travis Head and West Indies’ Andre Russell, who have given a new dimension to batting in the IPL, will also be seen playing in the T20 World Cup next month. Therefore, it is natural for the fans to expect dominance of the batsmen once again. But due to many reasons their attitude in the World Cup will not be the same as in the IPL.
First of all, teams will not get the facility of impact players in the T20 Cup. Mitchell Starc accepted this after playing a big role in helping Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) win their third IPL title.
Starc had said, ‘There is an impact player rule here (in IPL) and it will not be there in the T20 World Cup. You have to trust your all-rounders more. You cannot keep your batting all-rounder at number 8, as you did in IPL.
He said, ‘I don’t think you will see such big scores in the T20 World Cup because there will be one batsman less.’
In the early part of the IPL, Chennai Super Kings used fast bowling all-rounder Shivam Dubey as a batsman through the impact player rule. Dubey played some match-winning innings against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Knight Riders.
But in the World Cup, this left-handed batsman will also have to showcase his bowling skills to get a place in the playing eleven, because vice-captain Hardik Pandya also plays a similar role and remains the first choice. Captain Rohit Sharma has already made this clear.
However this is only part of the story. The batsmen will also have to deal with pitches that will be very different from those used in the IPL.
West Indies Pitch Will Be Different From IPL Pitch…
An experienced curator told PTI, ‘West Indies pitches are no longer what they used to be in the 80s or 90s. Now they are slow and sometimes the ball stops. He said, ‘I am sure that the bowlers, especially the spinners, will play a greater role than in the IPL, especially from the second week of the tournament.’
The curator said, ‘India has included four spinners in its team. This was probably due to the nature of the West Indies pitches. So I don’t think we will be able to see a score of 250 there. Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal are specialist spinners, while Ravindra Jadeja and Akshar Patel are spin all-rounders.
Will There Be Less Runs Scored On America’s New Pitches?
In America, only Florida has the experience of hosting high profile cricket matches. New York and Texas are preparing to host this game for the first time. So will this affect the run scoring rate? Regarding this, the curator said, ‘Yes, it is possible that initially the teams would like to assess the pitch and other conditions. I think the drop-in pitches being used at some of these venues will be better than the natural pitches, so we may see some high-scoring matches in that period.
David Warner Said This On The Temperament Of The Pitches…
Australian opener David Warner said, ‘Due to the dry Caribbean pitches, the ball will become rough and start spinning. In IPL, the upper layer of the ball lasts longer and hence the ball turns less, he said, ‘I have played a lot of cricket there and have also played in CPL (Caribbean Premier League), the wickets there are slow and less bouncy. Let’s go.
Batsmen Had Committed Mutiny In IPL
The average run rate in IPL 2024 was 9.56, which is the highest so far in the history of the tournament. Apart from this the average score remained above 180. The average score of the first innings in Hyderabad was around 230 runs. Before IPL 2024, the 250-run mark was crossed only twice in the league, but teams managed to do so 8 times in the recently concluded season.
It Is Difficult To Score Runs In West Indies
The stadiums in West Indies are different. The average T20 score in Antigua is 123 runs and in Barbados it is 138 runs. In Guyana it is 124 runs and in Trinidad it is only 115 runs. The average T20 score in St. Vincent is 118 while the highest in Gross Islet is 139. Looking at these figures, the bowlers are expected to dominate T20 for at least a month.
