New York: Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has revealed that the news of Rishabh Pant’s fatal car accident in 2022 made him cry and he felt “even worse” when he saw the then charismatic wicketkeeper in the hospital.
Pant met with an accident on the Delhi-Dehradun highway on the night of December 30, 2022. His car caught fire but he was lucky to escape unharmed, even though his injuries were quite serious.
After a year of intensive recovery and rehab, he made a comeback to professional cricket during the Indian Premier League this year and returned to Team India in the ongoing T20 World Cup in the US this month.
“When I read about his accident I had tears in my eyes. And when I saw him in the hospital, it was even worse,” Shastri said in a video posted by the BCCI.
“And then for him to come back out there and play one of the biggest games ever in the A-Zone – India vs Pakistan – is heart-touching,” he said, referring to India’s six-run win on Sunday. ” Which Pant scored 42 runs.
The 26-year-old’s 31-ball innings and his excellent wicket-keeping played an important role in India’s victory.
After the match, Shastri recognized him as the BCCI Fielder of the Match and praised him for his innings and comeback.
“Batting… everyone knew what you were capable of – you have the Is.
“And not just for you, it’s an inspiration to millions of people around the world that even in the face of adversity and the jaws of death, you can overcome. Well done, brilliant. Keep up the good work, and keep moving forward Have fun guys, well played today.”
It was the second consecutive win of the event for the Men in Blue, taking them to the top of their group.
Shastri on Sunday said it was a “normal India-Pakistan game” with plenty of edge-of-the-seat action and the fans enjoyed it.
He said, “It was a fantastic game – a typical India-Pakistan game where the pendulum swings from one side to the other. It’s a game that puts everyone on edge.”
“A lot of people with weak hearts have heart attacks, so there are a lot of ambulances everywhere. And it showed today, the game is absolutely down to the wire.
“In the end, it’s the team that blocks the big moments and stays patient; they come out on top.”
