India’s recent win over co-hosts USA at the T20 World Cup 2024 in New York on Thursday ensured their place in the Super 8. Chasing a modest target of 111 runs, India achieved it by scoring 111/3 in 18.2 overs, thanks to Suryakumar Yadav’s unbeaten half-century (50* off 49 balls).
India has joined Australia, West Indies and South Africa among the four teams that have confirmed their place in the Super 8 stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Four places are still vacant. A total of 8 teams will compete in the Super 8 stage.
The ICC has already decided the matches for the Super 8 stage. India, designated A1, will face Australia, designated B2, on June 24.
Which Teams Will India Face in The Super 8 Stage?
India’s first match in the Super 8 stage will be against the top team of Group C on June 20. Given the current scenario and ICC’s priorities, Afghanistan is a likely opponent. This match is going to be held in Bridgetown, Barbados.
India’s second Super 8 match is scheduled for June 22, where it will face the second-placed team from Group D in Antigua. Currently, there is a lot of competition in Group D, with Bangladesh, Netherlands, Nepal all vying for places. However, Bangladesh is considered to be the frontrunner to secure the spot.
India’s final match in the Super 8 stage is against Australia on June 24 in St Lucia. Australia currently top Group B with three wins from three matches. Despite their group stage finish, the ICC pre-seeded them as ‘B2’ and India as ‘A1’, ensuring a showdown between the two cricket superpowers in the Super 8.
Super 8 Stage Format:
In the Super 8 stage, the teams will be divided into two groups of four each. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals. After two semi-final matches, the winners will compete in the final. The final match of T20 World Cup 2024 is to be held on June 29.
